Blackstaff Rats

So what is a Stud Affix then?

A Stud Affix (sometimes called a stud name) is a name given to a rattery (or kennel or cattery) that identifies animals bred by the holder of the stud name as being from that particular rattery. As our Stud Affix is "Blackstaff", all rats that we have bred have Blackstaff in front of their given name -- for example, Blackstaff Aisling, Blackstaff Siun, and Blackstaff Petronella Wyatt are three does from our line. A similar system is in place for dog and cat breeders (who register their stud affix with the relevant club).

...and where can I get one?

In the UK the National Fancy Rat Society registers stud affixes for rat breeders. In order to be allowed to register a stud name the applicant must have bred a rat that has become either a variety champion or a Show Champion at NFRS shows (i.e. has obtained at least eight stars or won Best in Show and/or Best Oppsite Age at least twice). The National Fancy Rat Society's website has more details about shows as well as contact addresses and a list of upcoming shows throughout the UK.
